The clouds begin to thicken as the skies are starting to darken to the west. Vehicles driving along Granby Street and along I-64 are simply background noise as a black truck pulls into a parking spot. The door opens and a figure steps down out of the truck. Dressed in a long black hooded trench coat and black boots visible below, a strand of blonde hair is seen from underneath the hood. Carrying a small bag with her, Jana Rikar walks along the sidewalk and then stops in front of a mausoleum, the name RICHARDS across the top.
“Hi Daddy.”
Jana takes a seat on the bench in front of the mausoleum, letting the hood fall back, showing a beaming smile. She eyes the plaque on the mausoleum, noting the pictures slid just against the sides of it - a picture of her just before her debut, another picture of her holding the WWH WildCard Title, a third of her holding the JWC title in front of the Burj Khalifa, and a drawing of her sitting on the beach.
“It’s been a little bit since I’ve had the chance to come see you. JWC kept me busy with everything then working for Limitless, GOL and now ECWF, it’s been a little taxing.”
The ambient light darkens as the clouds thicken even more.
“I know, Daddy, I’m spreading myself a little too thin. But not being the JWC Champion and Limitless being sporadic, I can control my time a little better now. I was part of that Young Guns Cup and actually advanced to the Second round. It was amazing. I really didn’t know what to expect in it. I just knew that the more I work, the better I could get. But it really got to be Sunday night. I just couldn’t do anything in the Wartime Rumble like I wanted to. I was just … spent.”
The clouds break and a small sliver of sunshine brightens up the ‘Richards’ name on the plaque.
“I know, I’m a Richards and actually.. I am again.”
She pulls an envelope out from her inside jacket pocket.
“Officially got the divorce from Lex. It was in the mail today when I got back from Dublin. Bittersweet, you know. I mean I thought I was doing right but circumstances were beyond my control. But it’s different with Doc. Well, his name isn’t Doc, but he’s my Doc Holliday, just like I’m his Lady J. And yeah, we’re taking things slowly. He’s gonna have some special dessert for my 21st birthday. Doc also mentioned something about letting me buy my first bottle in the States. Said it was something like a rite of passage thing that his family does.”
The clouds darken and spits of rain start to fall. Jana looks up with a smile.
“I promise Daddy, I’ll buy it then take a sip of it and that’s it. I’m just glad that he thinks of me as family. Momma and Todd are ok with him. They’ve only met him in passing but we’ll have dinner or something very soon.”
The rain stops as suddenly as it started. The winds whip up a little as Jana shifts her weight on the bench.
“Not sure how you know these things, but yeah, I’m sorta unsettled about a few things. Guess it’s just weird to be in this position. I’m thinking about working some more in Dubai. The money’s too good to pass up. Limitless is still fun. But I don’t think I’ll be going back to G.O.L for now. And still not sure about ECWF. There’s some good people there but working weekly, it’s a bit much with the others. I’m sure I’ll figure it all out though.”
Jana smiles as she stands up.
“I do have a surprise for you.”
She takes off the trenchcoat and is wearing a San Angeles Police Department uniform, complete with stun baton on her side and cuffs behind her back. She takes a black beret out from her pocket and puts it on. The winds go calm as she stands at attention.
“Deputy Jana Rikar, reporting for duty, Sir. Ready to Protect Serve. Even got the name tag on it.”
She beams with pride as she points to the ‘RIKAR’ patch just above her heart.
“I knew when I saw it at the Comicon in San Diego that I had to get it. It was my birthday present to myself, plus I knew you’d get a kick out of it, being the Demolition Man and all. I still watch that movie every so often and even have the theme as my ringtone. Reminds me of you , Daddy.”
Jana bows her head slightly and takes off the beret. She reaches inside of her uniform and takes a photo out. Walking up the mausoleum, she slides the photo beside of the other pictures.
“It’s one of me in the uniform, so that I’m always gonna be here to Protect Serve for you, Daddy.”
She sniffles slightly as a few tears run down her cheek.
“I’m sure people think I’m probably crazy for always coming to see you but it’s a comfort to me to know you’re here for me, that you’re always watching over me and that I can just let things out if I need to. But I’m still gonna come by or visit somehow because, I miss you, Daddy.”
The sun breaks through to shine down upon Jana and her eyes light up as she turns into the sunlight.
“I know. I love you too.”
Jana wipes the tears from her face and puts on the beret as the cloud cover thickens again.
“Ok , Rikar, no more sniffling and crying, you gotta be a big girl now. You’re 21…”
She turns her head around and looks towards the mausoleum with a smile.
“... but I’m still Daddy’s girl. I’m gonna head back to see Momma and Todd and Doc now. I’ll be back soon and we’ll talk some more. Love you Daddy.”
Jana walks back over to the bench and picks up her trench coat. Draping it over the arm, she strides back towards her truck. She hits the remote start button and the truck fires up, the headlights shining towards her. Jumping up into the truck, Jana taps the push button start and looks towards the mausoleum. The headlights shine on the pictures of Jana under the side of the name plaque. She smiles as she puts the truck into gear and drives away.
