~Six Seconds~
Walking up onto the stage at the press area of the Hallenstadion, a surprisingly confident Jana Rikar heads towards the podium in front of the members of the media. Dressed in a flowing blue abaya and hijab with a strand of blonde hair peeking out from under the hijab. She strides to the microphone and takes it in her hand, walking along the stage.
Jana: “Um… Hi!“
The press is quiet as Jana puts a hand on her hip.
Jana: “Switzerland has German, French, Italian, and Romansh as official languages and I can’t do a formal welcome in EACH ONE!”
She laughs as some of the press corps stifle a laugh.
Jana: “Anyway, it’s great to be here … and on time I might say. I’m just glad I could make this press conference. Most of the ‘experts’ online had me going home but The Time Bomb proved them incorrect once again. Cait is a great competitor but I think my Operation: Harlot idea got in her head. She made the one error and one inside cradle later, you’re talking to me instead of her.”
Jana puts her hand along the edge of the abaya with a slightly dejected look on her face.
Jana: “It wasn’t all good times though as Gabby Ganuza managed to defeat me for the JWC Title. It doesn’t mean though, that I’m not gonna represent JWC here in the Young Guns Cup. It just means I’m gonna use the YGC to build towards another shot at getting my title back. And Speaking of the Young Guns Cup, I guess I should talk about my next match and it’s against James Edwards.”
She sighs heavily.
Jana: “The oddsmakers again have me as the underdog and rightfully so to be honest. I know Mr. Edwards very well. He was in the rebirth of Defiant back 2 years ago. We had some creative differences after his exit at Shamrock Showdown, and I understood completely. The styles just didn’t mesh well, so no hard feelings there. But because I did have to market The Burning Heart, I had to do the research and it’s extensive. He’s a Three Time Champion, he’s been a winner everywhere he goes and he’s one of the toughest wrestlers out there… like a Two Dollar steak as my Uncle Vince would say.”
Jana looks out at the press and slowly takes off her hijab, letting her blonde hair flow across her shoulders.
Jana: “Regardless of who he is, I have to be me. I’m gonna take a beating, I know that, but it just takes three seconds to get a fall... So Six Seconds is all I need and I’m off to the quarterfinals. If anyone has any questions, I’d be glad to answer them now.”
Reporter: “What’s your strategy to avoid the strikes of Edwards in this match?”
Jana: “Prayer?”
The crowd laughs as Jana giggles then pulls a slip of paper from her sleeve.
Jana: “Actually I came up with a list of possibilities for me that may help my chances against James. Hope he misses his flight.”
She looks over an official with the YGC, who shakes his head no.
Jana: “Nuts.”
Jana scratches the paper as the crowd chuckles again.
Jana: “Oversleeps. Gets caught on the wrong side of the Hardbrucke Bridge over the Limmat after an accident on the bridge. Forgets his gear. Comes down with a 20 minute flu. Gets locked in his locker room and can’t answer the bell.”
She looks over at the crowd with a smile then wads the paper up and tosses it behind her.
Jana: “Honestly, I’m just going to do my best to avoid all the strikes. I know I can’t but I just have to limit the ones he does connect with, and hopefully connect with a few of my own and make them count. He has more ways of defeating me that I have moves in my entire arsenal. My uncle Migo said there was a style that a famous boxer use to employ where he would basically make his opponent tire himself out by avoiding as much as he could, then hit a couple punches and drop the guy.”
Reporter: “You’re going to try a Rope-A-Dope with the Burning Heart?”
Jana: “If you guys have a better idea, I’m all ears, you’re the experts on all the wrestlers, I’m just a girl who hasn’t had but 20 some matches in her career. If it works, I’m a genius. If it doesn’t, There’s no harm done because James is a World Class Striker and Grappler. I’m way way WAY out of my league here, and all of you experts, and roughly 70% of the public, say I don’t have a chance in the world to win. But, Switzerland didn’t have a chance against Brazil in the World Cup this past summer. Instead they drew against one of the best in the world. The Swiss Junior Hockey Team should have been throttled by Sweden a few days ago, but instead beat the top team in the Group 2-0. Even the little college from Baltimore played against the #1 team in the NCAA Basketball Tournament last March, with no chance in the world of being the mighty Virginia...... And became the only #16 seed to ever beat a #1 in history of the game.”
Jana sets her smile firmly.
Jana: “If they can do it, why can’t I? You don’t have the be the best overall in a tourney like the Young Guns Cup, you just have to be better than the opponent that's in front of you and have to do it twice. It’s been a honor and privilege to be a part of the Young Guns Cup. If I don’t win, I’ve got 3 more chances before I age out, so this is a big learning experience regardless of the outcome.”
She walks back over and picks up the wad of paper and returns back to the microphone.
Jana: “But I do hope we meet again very soon, perhaps in Sweden next week. Thanks everyone. Be Well”
Jana throws up the Victory Sign at the press corps as she walks off the stage.
