'Crossing that Bridge'
New Orleans, LA
11:45AM 1/10/19
“They say that you were only as good as your last match. I don't know who ‘They’ are but ‘They’ have an awful lot of good quotes.”
Standing along the side of the road, Jana Rikar stands just below the sign for the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the toll bridge across Lake Pontchartrain just outside of New Orleans. Dressed in a black Sam Tolson ‘Bombs Away’ T-shirt and jeans, the wind blows her blonde hair back, away from her face.
“And if I'm as good as my last match, then I hope to be pretty good at my next match. My last match was my first match here in ECWF and it was a victory. But this next match, well, it's going to be a lot different. Because, it's not that I do not know my opponent or know OF my opponent. It's because I KNOW my opponent.”
The wind changes slightly and her hair whips into her face. She slides her hand across it to pull her hair back again.
“Working in other places, you’re gonna run up against people who are your adversaries. Those are people that you consider your opponents. They’re your equals but they’re still your opponents, so you don't delve into things very deeply. You wanna scratch the surface, know of their professional exploits and their legacy. But this next match involves somebody that I know.”
A few cars pass in front of Jana as she stands against the bridge standard.
“Two years ago, we were not adversaries, but actually employee and employer. Sam Tolson worked for me in Defiant Wrestling. It was a One-Shot deal, just for one match. I learned more and more about Sam Tolson, the wrestler, in order to Hype her up for that match. But as I did, I learned a lot more about Sam Tolson, the person.
The one thing that many people fail to understand about Sam Tolson is the passion that she has for this business. She works the world over. Her in-ring exploits are numerous. I can’t even think about how many opponents she’s been across from. Even just here in the ECWF, she’s a former 6 Man tag champ and the current Horror-Core champion as we speak. She’s had more matches in a month than I’ve had in my entire 8 month career. She’s gonna be dropping bombs and probably suplexing me all over the arena, and who knows what else she might do.”
Jana points at the T-shirt and smiles.
“And I’m still gonna be out there, just three seconds away from winning the match. I can’t out-wrestle Sam, I can’t out-kick Sam, and I can’t out-suplex Sam, but I can try to outlast her. I might be able to outwit her. And I might be able to just get her outside of her comfort zone. It’s worked so far for me in the past matched, so that’s what I’m gonna try to do. It’s not a bold strategy but if it’s not broke, why screw it up, right?
No fancy talk from me, Sam. I’m not a Pretty Little Murder Machine like you are. I’m not the veteran wrestler or fighter that you are. But what I am, is exactly how it sounds. A Time Bomb. I’m like that old Timex watch that my Uncle Migo has, the one that takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And it’s gonna be slowly ticking down to the time where I can find that weakness, find that mistake, find that opening. then …”
Jana tears apart the ‘Bombs Away’ T-shirt, revealing a Jana Rikar “Be Well” T-Shirt in white and red underneath..
“… Tick Tick Boom goes the Dynamite!”
Three cars past in front of Jana and she smiles.
“Three Seconds. Three Taps. Three slaps of the hand from Eaven Maloney on the mat and I knock off the Horror-Core champ. I hope there’s no shenanigans from Eavan. I hope there’s a clean match. But I also hope that I come away with a Win. And that’s all that matters.
See ya in the ring, Sam. Be Well.”
Jana throws up the Victory signal with two fingers. A bus passes in front of her and after it clears, Jana is gone, but the torn ‘Bombs Away’ T-shirt is hanging on the sign.
