Cautiously walking up onto the stage, a slightly timid Jana Rikar heads towards the podium in front of the sparse members of the media at the Hotel Sarajevo. Dressed in a flowing blue abaya with the JWC Championship slightly visible around her waist as she strides to the microphone. She looks up in the air for a second then speaks into the microphone.
Jana: “Z-dra-vo svima. Veo-ma mi je drago da sam ovde i da bu-dem deo kupa Young Guns. Nad-am se da ću u Sarajevu sve po-no-si-ti.“
Members of the Bosnian Press Corps applaud as Jana smiles with a grin reminiscent of a child succeeding in spelling a large word correctly. The rest of the press looks over at local contingent then back at Jana who sheepishly smiles, her confidence now beaming as she speaks.
Jana: “What I said was ‘Hello everybody. I am very pleased to be here and to be a part of the Young Guns Cup. I hope that I can make everybody proud here in Sarajevo.’ It was just in Bosnian because that's just one of the silly things that I do.”
Jana laughs playfully as the rest of the crowd picks up on the earlier comment.
Jana: “So, this is really an honor for me to be here as part of the Young Guns Cup. I was looking at the roster of amazing superstars that are here. All the wrestlers and all the fighters, it’s amazing there’s 48 of us that are under 25 and that's just a small inkling of what's out there in the business. I’m a little star struck just walking through my hotel. Take a look at some of the names are on this list.”
She opens up her abaya, the JWC Title now on display as she wears a ‘Mass Destruction’ T-shirt and Slacks underneath. Taking a piece of paper from her pocket, she looks at the list of names.
Jana: “James Edwards. Annie Zellor. Zoey Lucas. Venus LeCavalier. I mean these are HUGE superstars in the business. I'm an eight-month rookie but yet here I am. I know that I'm not just a regular rookie. I still hold the JWC Championship.”
Jana taps the title around her waist.
Jana: “I held a WildCard Championship in WWH for a little bit but I'm a little different than everybody else because I was a wrestling owner. I had a place that I called my own, rebuilding a dream that proved to be a nightmare in the end. Some bad mismanagement and some questionable tactics by some unscrupulous people really put me into a bad place with Defiant but as much as I wanted it to survive, it didn't. But everything happens for a reason so when Defiant closed, it kind of brought me to this place in my life.”
She takes a second to look down then look back up.
Jana: “My family is always been in the business. I have uncles and my mom, my stepdad, and my late father, they're all wrestlers. I’m wearing one of Dad’s T-shirts today. I needed that security blanket since I’m here with all of you.”
She laughs slightly as does some of the reporters.
Jana: “I grew up in the ring. For 14 years I travelled with my mom and my step dad and the rest of my family. I learned more about throwing dropkicks at 2 years old before I learned how to play hopscotch. I used to take naps on the turnbuckle cuz my mom would have me in a papoose and she tie me up against the turnbuckle I would lay my head on the top turnbuckle and fall asleep while people were in the ring going through their sparring motions. So, for me, to be a part of this under-25 tournament with 48 of the brightest Superstars in the business, heck, I'm just lucky to be called one of the 48. I'm not sure if you have any questions for me or not, but you know, I'm just happy to be here. I just want to prove to myself and prove it to everybody that this little girl knows what she's doing. So if anybody has any questions, I'll be happy to answer.”
Bosnian Reporter: “Thank you for addressing us in our home language. Your accent is a little different.”
Jana: “I grew up in Virginia so the southern drawl might have changed the words a little.”
Bosnian Reporter: “Perhaps so. We noticed that you’re wearing the traditional abaya, is there some significance to it?”
Jana: “Well, I’ve been very blessed since joining Jumeriah and it’s been sorta my thing there, so I thought I should honor them by wearing here. Plus.. It’s quite cold here and this abaya is very toasty!”
A chuckle or two comes from the press corps.
Reporter: “Are you looking forward to matching up against anyone?”
Jana: “The only one I’m looking at right now, it’s my match versus Cait Flanagan. I’ve scouted her best I could. I even called in a favor to someone she’s having a bit of a tiff with, Hey Little Pixie Pump!”
Jana waves towards one of the cameras.
Jana: “But realistically, I can’t look past Cait. She may be a tart or a harlot or whatever you wanna call her, I just hope she doesn’t catch cold while here in Sarajevo. I get that people like to flaunt or flirt, but Most people usually wear more in the ring than what they’d wear at the beach or in the bedroom. Maybe I grew up differently but that’s just personal preference. I know she uses her appearance to lull people into a false sense. She’s not going to do that with me though. I may be a little new to the biz, and a bit naive, but I’m not that dumb. Momma didn’t raise a fool.”
Reporter: “So what are your expectations here in the YGC?”
Jana: “Honestly, I’m just happy to be a part of the show. If I can get a win or two, then more power to me. I’ve always heard about paying your dues and cutting your teeth. That’s why I’m here.”
An official makes a circular motion in the air.
Jana: “Ok, that’s my cue. I hope everyone enjoys the show and Hopefully, I’ll be talking to you again. Be Well!”
Jana throws up two fingers in the air then walks off the stage with a smile on her face.
